The 2010 - 2011 Initial Student Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) will be available online December 1, 2009. The web site you will want to visit is www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org which provides the FFAA to students seeking state scholarship ( like Florida Bright Futures) and grant awards for the 2010 -11 post secondary academic year. IN ORDER TO RECEIVE MONEY FROM FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES, THIS APPLICATION MUST BE COMPLETED. Please contact Gerri Kinsey in the guidance office if you have any questions!

My College QuickStart

My College QuickStart is an easy-to-use, online, personalized college and career planning kit available free of charge to all students who take the PSAT/NMSQT. The information and answers your child provided when they took the test are incorporated into this useful tool, and it presents their data back to them in four main parts:

• My Online Score Report- an enhanced score report that allows students to review each test question, the student’s answer, and the correct answer with answer explanations.

• My SAT Study Plan- a customized SAT study plan based on student PSAT/NMSQT test performance, highlighting skills for review and practice.

• My College Matches- A starter list of colleges based on the student’s state and indicated choice of major.

• My Major and Career Matches- Major and career matches that are compatible with the student’s general interests and personality type.

Access is available using the access code printed on the student’s paper score report, and the tool can be utilized throughout high school. Using My College QuickStart together with your child is a great way to introduce and guide your child through important aspects of the college-going process. Semester 1

ACTION PLAN:

1. Meet with your guidance counselor to discuss your college plans. Review your schedule with her to make sure you’re enrolled in challenging classes that will help you prepare for college. Colleges prefer four years of English, math, science, and a foreign language.

2. Take the PSAT/NMSQT on October 14, 2009 @ MCS

3. Start a calendar with important dates and deadlines

4. Get more involved with extracurricular activities. Make sure you inform your guidance counselor of these activities.

5. Go to college fairs in your area.

6. Review the requirements for the Florida Bright Future Scholarships

7. Start building your G.P.A. Realize that in the end, you will be responsible for the classes you took and the grades you earned and someone besides your parents will be looking at your final grades

8. Attend the Jacksonville National College Fair.

Semester 1

ACTION PLAN:

1. Take the PSAT/NMSQT on October 14, 2009 @ MCS

2. Start your college search.

a. Make lists of your abilities, preferences, and personal qualities. List things you may want to study and do in college.
b. Jumpstart your college planning by reading about majors and careers. Please visit the MCS Library or the Guidance office for these resources.
c. Attend college fairs and take college tours.
d. NACAC College Fair: Saturday October 13, 2007, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the Prime Osborn Convention Center

3. Start thinking about financial aid.

a. Remember to keep your G.P.A. up
b. There are many scholarships that depend on your grades
c. Familiarize yourself with the FAFSA

4. Register for the SAT and the ACT.

5. Attend the Jacksonville National College Fair.

SENIOR Calendar
Semester 1

ACTION PLAN:

Narrow your list of colleges to between 5 and 10 and review it with your guidance counselor. Get an application and financial aid information from each. Visit as many as possible.

2. Make a master calendar and note:

a. Test dates, fees, and deadlines
b. College application due dates
c. Recommendations, transcripts, and other necessary materials

3. Ask for recommendations (teachers, principals, guidance
counselors, etc…). Give each person your resume, a stamped addressed envelope, and any required forms.

4. Write application essays and ask teachers, parents, and
friends to read first drafts.

5. Try to apply “Early Action” or “Early Decision”. Colleges
will know you are serious about your education and future goals.

6. Use Scholarship Search @ collegeboard.com and review
scholarship books.

7. Stay focused on your grades. Remember most scholarships
depend on your G.P.A
